Local Market Cusco, Peru

One of the things I love to do when traveling is to walk around the local Markets. There is something so real and raw about the locals market, from the exotic foods to the smell of fresh ground spices in the air. Its magical and I feel like I’m experiencing the culture as it has lived for hundreds of years. The Cusco market is great and it sprawls out from the main market into the surrounding streets where villagers from the Sacred Valley come to sell their goods. The women in their wool ponchos and tall brown brimmed hats always makes me smile. They seem guarded, in a way, to foreigners but with a little love, a smile and good intentions I can usually get a smile that melts my heart. I love to see all the brightly colored fruits and vegetables from this region piled up and lined neatly on a brightly colored hand made Peruvian blanket. Usually, right beside these vendors are all the stands that are cooking these delicious veggies in homemade soups with recipes that span generations and made with love that you can definitely taste. Many people get scared to try and sample the local street food but with piping hot soup and a crowd of locals eating it I jump right in and enjoy. For about a $1 I get a bowl of chicken soup with a ton of fresh vegetables and a lot of smiles and giggles from the locals that I sat down next to. After a great meal I really enjoy just meandering through the isles and taking in this thing called life as the locals go about their day! - One Love
